If you have specific needs from the repository you can use them or just plop all of them into the image. I don’t have one specific recommendation as it varies from client to client which parts and pieces I need.

Thanks Chris, good write-up. I have two things to add:

1. For the VMware base image you can also use the VMware Online depot (instead of downloading and using the Offline bundle) like this:
Add-EsxSoftwareDepot https://hostupdate.vmware.com/software/VUM/PRODUCTION/main/vmw-depot-index.xml

2. I have written a PowerCLI script that automates the manual procedure of building a customized image. See http://esxi-customizer-ps.v-front.de.
